Buying From a Company Your Bank Has Heard Of

There is a version of this decision where LegalZoom is correct and it goes like this. You do not want to research nine vendors. You want to hand a compliance chore to an outfit that has existed for decades, advertises on television, and will not be gone next spring. Your accountant knows the name. Your banker knows the name. That is worth something, and anybody telling you it is worth nothing is selling you something.

We are also selling you something. Which is why the rest of this page sticks to numbers and to what Wisconsin actually requires, rather than to opinions about anyone's service.

Nobody Sends You a Second Quote

Registered agent service is $249 a year at LegalZoom. It renews on its own. Our July 2026 check found no promotional first year, no bundled discount, and no tier where the figure comes down.

That is $150 a year more than we charge, every year, for a role the state defines identically no matter who fills it. Three years of the difference is $450. Ten is $1,500. The renewal will not announce itself and will not ask whether you have compared anything lately, which is the entire mechanic of automatic billing and the reason people stay on prices they would not choose today.

Wisconsin Wrote an Email Address Into the Law

Worth reading what the $249 is buying compliance with, because the list is short.

Wisconsin's agent statute wants a natural person living in this state, or a qualifying company, whose own business office is identical with your registered office. It wants that office to be a real physical place with a street address, not a box at the post office and not a rented mailbox and not somewhere that only answers a phone. It wants consent, so nobody is appointed by surprise. It wants a genuine place of business or activity in Wisconsin.

And then it wants something no other state in this comparison bothers to legislate: the agent has to have an email address.

Not as a matter of good practice. As a statutory condition of holding the role. The Department of Financial Institutions carries it through to the annual report, where the agent's email is a field that has to be answered rather than skipped. Wisconsin decided, in writing, that an agent who cannot be reached electronically is not really doing the job.

It is a low bar and everybody clears it. A $249 agent has an inbox. A $90 agent has an inbox. We have an inbox. What the statute does not contain is a premium tier, a preferred class of provider, or any advantage available to the entity that spent more. The DFI record shows a name and an address. It does not show a price.

Service of process is never metered and never billed separately. It is scanned and filed in your portal the same day a server delivers it, and an email follows immediately, because the clock on a summons starts when it is served and not when you happen to read it. You need three things from us to complete the form, and none of them exist until you are a customer: our Wisconsin entity name as the incoming agent, the registered office street address that goes with it, and the agent email address Wisconsin requires on the record. The filing itself. Wisconsin uses one document, the statement of change the department publishes as Form 13, also written Corp13. It handles the agent, the registered office, or both. Its destination is DFI's corporate and consumer services division, which is where Wisconsin keeps entity records. You supply the entity name and its DFI identification number, the new agent and office details, and confirmation that the incoming agent consents. LegalZoom's signature is not required and its cooperation is not a factor, so nothing about your exit runs through a retention conversation.

The fee is $10 filed through the department's online system, or $25 if you print it and mail it. Expedited handling is available for another $100 and a routine agent change has no reason to buy it.

After it posts. Look your entity up in the department's public search and confirm the agent line reads our name. Then cancel LegalZoom, and set a note for the auto-renewal date so a charge does not land for a seat somebody else is already sitting in. From that point the DFI's mail comes to us, we image it the day it arrives, and the annual report notice that the department sends 60 to 90 days ahead of your window reaches you with time to act on it.
